VA-Hydro Legionella Liquidation - Eliminating Legionella in Drinking Water

Legionella in water supply is a real danger. The causes of Legionnaires' disease are feared and must be eliminated as soon as possible. Legionella in drinking water is not primarily about the contaminated water, but rather about the aerosols that, when inhaled, pose a health risk.

The danger of Legionella

The highly toxic bacteria of the species Legionella pneumophila initiate harmful metabolic processes. They are capable of activating enzymatic processes that negatively affect cellular processes and burden the entire organism. Severe respiratory illnesses threaten not only seniors and immunocompromised individuals, although they are the main risk group. The problem of increased Legionella contamination has become an increasingly serious issue over the past 20 years. Outdated pipelines, contaminated water catchment tanks, and inadequately maintained air conditioning systems with corresponding cooling towers provide the bacteria with the environment in which they can multiply unchecked.

Legionella can be found in waters around the world. They become dangerous when they exceed a certain concentration. In Germany, the limit is 100 Legionella per 100 milliliters of water. The cause of the proliferation is higher temperatures between 25 and 45 °C, which are found in water systems. Once the bacteria are in the system, they multiply at an uncontrolled rate. This point is particularly critical when the temperature is lowered as part of upcoming energy-saving measures.

Only at temperatures above 60 °C are the bacteria killed, and temperatures below 20 °C significantly inhibit their multiplication.

VA-Hydro - Legionella Liquidation for maximum protection

It is not the contaminated drinking water that is responsible for Legionella infection, but rather aerosols that enter the lungs through the airway. One particularly insidious aspect of Legionella in drinking water is their ability to rapidly spread through cells of the immune system while secreting virulence factors, some of which are extremely toxic and immediately exert their damaging influence. This causes their host cells to die immediately and activates breakdown processes.

The water quality is constantly monitored for Legionella. Restrictions may be imposed by authorities already at 100 CFU per 100 milliliters. Once the value reaches 10,000, the health department can impose a shower ban or even the closure of facilities such as swimming pools.
To counteract this, prophylaxis is practiced, often thermally, which requires a very high energy expenditure, or chemically, which can not only be harmful to the environment but also to health.

VA-Hydro eliminates Legionella contamination through physical means. The water from the raw water tank is treated in a bypass system and returned after filtration. In addition to Legionella, traces of fungi and algae spores are also effectively eliminated. This effectively prevents the danger of Legionella entering the treatment circuit through the drinking water. The entire filtration process is environmentally friendly and carried out by physical means. Chemical cleaning agents and thermal treatment processes, which require a lot of energy to heat the water to over 60°C, are now a thing of the past.

VA-Hydro Legionella Liquidation - Applications

The VA-Hydro by VISION AQUA® is already being used in heavy industry, breweries, and many other sectors because the system offers numerous advantages over chemical and thermal methods.

VA-Hydro Legionella Elimination - compact including pump

The VA-Hydro is ideal for smaller applications in its compact version. The corresponding pump for the compact version has a capacity of up to 2.5 m3/h to direct the water into the system for treatment.
For applications with non-pressurized containers for water storage, the VA-Hydro is available as an open circuit. If you use pressure vessels for water storage, the VA-Hydro is the best choice for closed circuits.
